Partners is seeking an intern to work on Africa-programs to: assist in event planning and preparation, conduct and summarize country-specific and subject-area research; attend meetings/presentations and provide summary information to senior staff; develop presentations and interactive exercises; help prepare proposals for future projects; and brainstorm program ideas. The internship is flexible and there is an opportunity for increasingly interesting and complex work following demonstrated proficiency. A small stipend is available. Partners for Democratic Change (Partners), is one of the premier international organizations dedicated to providing the platform, skills and leadership to government, civil society and businesses to resolve conflict and advance constructive change. Partners is distinguished for its establishment of 20 independent, sustainable, national Centers with their own in-country boards of directors and staff to house the application of conflict and change management skills and programs in their countries: Albania, Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Colombia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Hungary, Indonesia, Jordan, Kosovo, Lithuania, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Romania, Senegal, Serbia, Slovakia and Yemen.

Partners is one of the only international organizations designed to create sustainable national Centers developing laws (mediation statutes), mechanisms (cooperative advocacy and consensus facilitation), and consultancies for business, government, and civil society to address disputes and manage multi-stakeholder conflicts in such areas as environment, employment, labor, corruption, community, and social development. Partners’ Centers apply negotiation, mediation, facilitation, cooperative advocacy (for activist civil society groups) and consensus facilitation, enabling stakeholders to work out agreements on complex policy, program, and resource issues, in four areas: Accountable Governance; Inclusive Communities (national minority groups); Sustainable Environment and Economic Development; and, Corporate-Community Engagement.

In 2010, Partners expanded the network to Africa and established a new Partners center in Senegal – Partners Senegal – Center for Civic Collaboration. In addition to building local institutions, Partners is working with Partners Senegal to implement a new program with AED funded by USAID – Program for Governance and Peace in Senegal. Also in 2010, Partners established the African Institute for Security Sector Transformation (AISST) which is co-located with Partners Senegal.

Position Title: Africa Program Intern, Part-time

Qualifications: Relevant work experience and interest in Africa, conflict management, security sector reform and international issues; graduate-level studies; strong research, writing and editing skills; computer proficiency; excellent interpersonal skills; and a desire to learn. Fluency in French is required.

Start/End Dates: September - December 2010.
