Increasingly American companies are competing not just against other companies, but against companies that are extensions and agents of foreign nations. These state companies are expanding their presence in the developing world, locking down sought-after resources and serving the foreign policy interests of their parent states. The role and impact of these state companies should be examined – how are they affecting the free market system and capitalism?

Please join Dr. Ian Bremmer, the founder and president of the Eurasia Group, who will discuss these issues and his book, The End of the Free Market: Who Wins the War Between States and Corporations. Bremmer offers an examination of the threat the emerging powers of China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia pose to the free market, providing informative case studies of economies with varying degrees of state control: Algeria's authoritarian regime, Mexico's relatively open and democratic system, and China, the leading practitioner of state capitalism, in which Beijing has assumed only more economic power in the wake of the financial crisis. He weighs how free market economies can compete and succeed in this new environment.

This event will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. in Washington on Tuesday, June 15. Copies of The End of the Free Market  will be available for purchase. To attend, please ensure you are logged in to your YPFP member account and register below. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at events@ypfp.org.

We hope to see you June 15.

France and China: Political Reconciliation and Beyond

After the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China is currently hosting another international mega-event, the 2010 World Expo taking place in Shanghai; France used this event, “largely overlooked by the American public,” as the backdrop for an official state visit to China to undo much of the harm wrought by President Sarkozy unto the bilateral relationship since 2008.
